How to stop jumping up

While some dog owners might consider jumping up a cute display of affection from a puppy, this behavior quickly becomes unacceptable as a dog gets older. You need to make your dog understand that this is not acceptable behavior. This can be accomplished without verbal commands.

When your dog starts to jump up, turn sideways and either extend your leg or lean over and with your hip give a body block. The object is to keep your dog from getting his paws on you.

When your dog has all four feet on the floor, immediately squat down and give him attention. He will learn that sitting with all four feet on the floor will get him the attention he is seeking.

If your dog manages to jump up and get his paws on you DON’T push him away with your hands, you dog may interpret this as play. Some people lightly step on the toes of one of the dog's rear feet, but not enough to hurt the dog. All you want to do is make this behaviour uncomfortable to them. Say nothing.

Performed consistently, these actions can eliminate jumping behavior.

For some chronic jumpers, the use of a specially designed harness is required to discourage this habit.
